GALLERY
L. Parker Stephenson Photographs specializes in work that represents creative documentary practices by artists who are engaged with social, cultural and environmental themes. After running her gallery on Madison Avenue in New York City for more than 15 years, she is transitioning to dealing privately.
LPSP represents a select roster of artists from the U.S., Europe, and Japan, serving as their exclusive dealer or sole North American representative.
In addition to representing living artists and estates, LPSP maintains an inventory of vintage photographs, with a focus on avant-garde and classic works by influential figures from the 1920s through the 1950s. Over the years, she has curated exhibitions that explore early to mid-20th century modernist and experimental photography, as well as thematic shows that trace the broader history and evolution of the medium.
Many of the gallery’s solo exhibitions marked significant milestones—introducing artists to new audiences or presenting their work in the United States for the first time. Notable among these are Kikuji Kawada, J.D. 'Okhai Ojeikere, Sirkka-Liisa Konttinen, John Davies, Raphaël Dallaporta, and Witho Worms. Since their exhibitions, these artists' works have entered prominent private collections and major museum holdings.
LPSP works with a diverse range of clients, from seasoned collectors to those making their first acquisition, as well as institutions in the U.S. and internationally.
The gallery has been a member of AIPAD since 2012 and participated in its annual fair—now known as The Photography Show—for over a decade. Additional fair appearances include Classic Photographs Los Angeles, Art on Paper, Nantucket Antiques Fair, and Paris Photo.
Inquiries are always welcome.
HISTORY
In May 2025, L. Parker Stephenson will transition from gallery owner to private dealer, continuing her dedicated focus on fine art photography. From sixteen years her eponymous gallery was located on Madison Avenue between 65th and 66th streets, where it became known for its curated exhibitions and thoughtful approach to collecting.
Parker’s journey into the art world began thirty years ago, when she left a successful career in banking to pursue her passion for photography. Her formal introduction to the field came as an apprentice to pioneering photography dealer Harry H. Lunn, Jr., whose influence helped shape the recognition of photography as a collectible fine art medium. This foundation was further enriched by roles at both the auction house level and the International Center of Photography (ICP), where she worked closely with Director Willis “Buzz” Hartshorn.
She later joined renowned dealer Howard Greenberg, serving as Director of Gallery 292—the more intimate counterpart to Greenberg’s main space. During her time with the Gallery in SoHo (2000–2003) and later at the Fuller Building (2003–2006), Parker curated nearly 30 exhibitions and oversaw relationships with numerous well-known artists and estates.
As both a gallerist and now private dealer, Parker offers clients a personal, informed, and engaging experience. She brings a deep knowledge of the medium, a keen curatorial eye, and a genuine enthusiasm for sharing photography’s rich history and expressive power. Her reputation is built on passion, connoisseurship, vision, integrity, and trust.
Land Acknowledgement
It is with gratitude and humility that we acknowledge that present day Upper East Side, where the Gallery is located, on the island of Manhattan, originally named Manahatta (hilly island), is on the unceded ancestral homelands of the Lenape people, who are indigenous peoples of this land. We pay honor and respect to their ancestors past and present.
