Sirkka-Liisa Konttinen’s series Byker, is about a neighborhood of Newcastle upon Tyne where she lived and photographed from 1969-1976. Konttinen sensitively and poignantly captured the social fabric of its community just prior to its transformation at the hands of urban redevelopment. When she returned more than a decade later, she photographed the new community of Byker Wall in color. The area had become international with many of the new inhabitants asylum seekers from Asia, Africa, South America but also included those who had been around before the community was broken-up.
