The pyramidal forms in Witho Worms’ series Cette montagne c’est moi are a result of excavation from mining, in this case, for coal. At each of the 68 sites photographed, Worms also gathered samples of the sedimentary rock which he later ground into a pigment. Using the pigment from the respective location, he produced a magnificent highly detailed contact print of the actual slag heap from whence it originated. In this way, the final carbon prints are self-referential and representational. Simultaneously, the cultural and economic histories of the place are represented in the shape of each mound and type of vegetation (or lack thereof) covering it.
