L. Parker Stephenson Photographs is pleased to announce its upcoming exhibition Raphaël Dallaporta: Grand Organs of Paris. Featured on the cover of Photograph magazine’s March/April issue and shown for the first time outside France, this suite of six images will also be on view at our booth during AIPAD’s Photography Show at the Park Avenue Armory (March 17th-20th). The artist will be at the gallery on Saturday March 19th from 9-11am and signing his new book, Antipersonnel, on Thursday, March 17th from 6-7pm at Dashwood Books in New York.

Initially conceived in 2005 on the heels of his Antipersonnel project on landmines, the images in Grand Organs of Paris were finally realized in 2009. Designed to complement the restraint or opulence of a church’s columns and arches, these massive musical instruments sit perched and nestled on balconies behind the congregation. Dallaporta’s photographs reveal the organs’ most intricate details.

The clarity, brilliance and luminosity found in these prints can be attributed in part to the images, each of which is created by combining four large-format digital negatives, and to the prints themselves, which are on Ilfochrome paper. The smaller sized images (10 x 8 inches) are intimately presented encased in box frames like reliquaries, whereas the larger prints measuring 60 x 50 inches display the imposing grandeur of these functional sculptures. In both, the subject is worthy of contemplation and veneration. This series follows Dallaporta’s theme of exploring cultural and historic patrimony, yet it offers a curative counterbalance to the Antipersonnel and Domestic Slavery series.

In a short period of time, Dallaporta has garnered international acclaim for his thoughtful and engaging projects. Just this month he received FOAM’s Paul Huf Award for 2011, which includes a monetary prize along with an exhibition at the museum in September and he has been nominated for the Prix Découverte at this year’s photo-festival in Arles. In the past year, he has been honored with ICP’s Infinity Award for Young Photographer and has had his work exhibited in eight solo exhibitions across three continents and numerous other group exhibitions and photo festivals.
