RAY MORTENSON | MEADOWLANDS

“I have always found myself attracted to the industrial landscape as a child growing up in a rural setting, I enjoyed solitude— wandering alone through woods and open fields. The Meadowlands, in many ways, was also a rural landscape. It was easily accessible from my studio in lower Manhattan and seemed an obvious destination. I went intuitively, effortlessly, wholeheartedly, and instantly felt comfortable there. I liked the soft, constant 60-cycle hum of the transmission lines. There was something soothing in the distant rush of the turnpike traffic. Wandering over the landfills with my camera, I felt like one of the “rovers” who were exploring the surface of Mars at the time. I was photographing objectively but, I don’t think, dispassionately.” - Ray Mortenson
