RAY MORTENSON | ROCKS

On the southern tip of Connanicut Island (Jamestown), there are three small state parks: Beavertail, Fort Getty, and Fort Wetherill. They are within walking distance of each other, yet they exhibit three completely different geologies. The formations all face the open ocean and show the effects of coastal evolution as well as bedrock geology.

Over a three-year period (2000-2003), Mortenson made single images, diptychs and polyptycs of these coastal bedrock outcroppings. The prints vary in size from 8x10 inch contacts to 17 foot long works a number of the larger works are printed in a 1:1 scale.

Mortenson has also produced a set of one-of-a-kind hand-made books of prints to give further insight into the depth and complexity of this project as well a newer catalog, Rocks - Jamestown, Rhode Island, 2001-2002.

Images below are organized by size: From smallest (8x10 inch contact prints) to multi-panel works measuring 17 feet (more than 5 meters). For a sense of scale, an installation image precedes the image of the print.
